Anne Samplonius was born February 11, 1969. Anne is from Montreal Canada, and has been a Pro cyclist for decades. She has been a solid rider and consistent team player riding in many tours and classics worldwide including Women's Challenge and World Championships.

In 1996 Anne won stage 6 in the prestigious Powerbar International Women's Challenge in Idaho. In 1997 she won stage 4 in the Tour International Feminin Du Finistere in France. Anne also won stage 1 in Wendy's International Cycling Classic in 2000, but perhaps her best placings were her 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings in Tim Hortons Canadian National Championships in 2003 and 2006, and certainly her silver medal at the 1994 World Time Trial Championships at Agrigento Italy. Anne also placed 2nd on the final GC of the 1994 Women's Challenge, and won the Solano road race in 2001.

Tour De Toona - 2006!

During the Women's Tour de Snowy in 1999, Anne was in one of the main groups going over Charlotte Pass and she flatted on the descent. Since the team van was following Kathy Watt, Anne waited for 8 minutes for a wheel change before another team came by and gave her a wheel. Unfortunately, the cogs didn't have the range for the winds and hills in the many miles that lay ahead, and it was a bad day for Anne.

This might remind people of Rene Vietto who sat by the side of road in that famous photo and went on to become famous when he gave his wheel to another team mate. Of course Anne's flat didn't lend itself to this kind of story, but it shows unlike some of the old romantic stories from the old days, women suffer these hardships all the time, usually with little or no mention, including often harsh accommodations and transfers. As if not to make matters worse, bad breaks continued in stage 5 for Anne when an overzealous helicopter pilot blew her off the road when he got too close while filming the riders. Fortunately she didn't suffer any injuries and quickly rejoined the group.

Tour De Toona - 2000!

1n 2006 Anne took 1st place in the criterium and 2nd place in both the time trial and road race at Tim Hortons Canadian National Road Championships in Quebec having what would seem to be her best year in recent memory. Anne also won stage 3 of the Tour d‘Ardèche in France after a 80km breakaway with a Lithuanian rider who couldn't keep pace, and Anne soloed in for the victory.

Its often been said, that it's not so much the winning that matters but the participation that counts and Anne has participated in just about every race under the sun in one form or another from time trials, classics, stage races and of course her incredible peformances in the world championships. She has won stages and rode well in the Tour of the Gila, Grande Boucle, Killington stage race and the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic. As a coach, her experience and skills are greatly admired and she works hard to pass those on to the new generation of women's cyclists.

Anne runs training camps in New Mexico for beginner and intermediate women cyclists, and was in a director management postion for the Subway racing team in 2005. Anne was considered one of the smartest riders to race in the ranks of pro women cycling and still races well after over a decade on the pro circuit.

Articles are written in my own words, researched from a variety of sources from Europe and the United States, including seeing things first hand at races, researching race videos, books, magazines, libraries etc. Stats and career highlights, palmares were confirmed as much as possible from several sources worldwide so that they can be as accurate as possible. In some instances the riders have contributed to the quality of the articles, and photos were taken at various races worldwide. Photos provided by a number of sources, from the riders to professional journalists, and courtesy of donors. Thanks to Cyclingnews for the quality of their archives approximately since the year 2000 helps to validate other sources worldwide. Special thanks to Alfred North for his tremendous contribution to the women's cycling over the last 30 years, which his archives dating from 1984 to the present day has been an overwhelming contribution to women's cycling worldwide. This is the first time that in depth compilation of the women rider's palmares have been well researched and posted to the Internet for the whole cycling world to see. They are comprehensive and cover several decades. If you use my work, please give credit.
