Laura Charameda was born in Marshall Michigan on June 5th, 1964. She is one of the best sprinters American has ever produced racking up over 250 victories in a career spanning several decades and Laura is still racing and winning today. Laura brilliantly shot to the top of the women pro ranks at a blistering pace in the mid 90's racking up an incredible string of victories in every respect from stage races, one day classics and the world championships. She was even an alternate for the Olympic games and took the bronze medal at the worlds just behind the two titans of all times, Jeannie Longo and Leontien Van Moorsel.

It's been said that Laura has won more road cycling victories then any rider in North America, and while it's also been stated that another Laura, Laura Van Gilder had as many as 350 victories, certainly no one could match Charameda combined palmares for both North America and Europe. Now that, is indeed impressive. Probably only Amber Neben comes to mind as the best stage racer ever for America, but surely Laura Charameda is the greatest North American cyclist of all times to race on a global scale. Perhaps also Genevieve Jeanson and Dede Barry comes to mind as well, but certainly Laura has more wins and has been at it longer. During the 1995 Tour of Germany, she dominated the race so much in nearly every stage that it was headlined in the papers as the Festival of Laura.

Laura started cycling as a way to get around the campus at the University of Oregon in Eugene, and became interested in racing after chatting with a group of racers near the campus. Laura was already a runner, so she decided to give it a try. She enter a race and finished last, admitting it was the hardest thing she had every done but she loved it, and by the late 80's she was well on her way to becoming the legend she is. She trained on amateur and professional teams at the Olympic cycling training center in Colorado Springs. From the late 80's to the mid 90's, she raced in both United States and Europe massing an incredible string of victories before being sidelined with a back injury after the 1996 World Championships.

Laura had several back surgeries, and suffered for a few years with pain and depression before she again focused her attention on training and coaching kids. Since that time Laura has become a world renown coach and has conducted numerous training camps and continues to race and coach today. Laura first coached Team Swift, and her experience in Europe was very useful in teaching and coaching kids to see the bigger picture of racing in countries where the sport is king. Recently in 2006, she was asked to coach and organize clinics for Endurance Performance Training Centers, which is also involved with the Tour of California.

Laura has trained both beginners and world class riders, and has been the director of numerous women's teams including Team Swift, Mcguire's and she was a team director in Italy and leader of the well known Sanson Gelati Team. Laura's infectious zeal towards cycling, personal charm and warmth towards working with cyclists has made her much admired as an instructor in the cycling world plus all the wisdom and insight she conveys to her students as well as peers. While in Italy she was known as the trainer on the road, excited to be back in Italy working with the teams.

I have seen archives for Laura going all the way back to 1988, but it wasn't long after that Laura starting winning and winning big. Laura's palmares includes being national champion and taking the bronze at the world championships in 1996. The first top three finish that I can find is Branders International Sprints in Texas in 1989. Just last year Laura won the 2006 Mclane Pacific, she has been 2nd in the race in the past and I am sure that was a special win for her. She really looked happy on the podium. That's my hometown in which I was born, so the race is special for me too.

Laura'a biggest wins are her national and world titles, but also she dominated the Tour of Germany and the Tour of Sicily. She has won stages in both the Idaho's Women's Challenge and the Tour De Feminin, and also rode well in the Memorial Michela Fanini. In 1993 and 1996 she was ranked number one in the United States in the world rankings. The list is too long to mention all the palmares, but Laura has seem to either won a stage or took the final GC of almost every major race on earth. I wish her the best in the coming years as both a coach, trainer and still a great rider at an age when most women have retired and gone onto other things. I definitely tip my hat to this lady!

Articles are written in my own words, researched from a variety of sources from Europe and the United States, including seeing things first hand at races, researching race videos, books, magazines, libraries etc. Stats and career highlights, palmares were confirmed as much as possible from several sources worldwide so that they can be as accurate as possible. In some instances the riders have contributed to the quality of the articles, and photos were taken at various races worldwide. Photos provided by a number of sources, from the riders to professional journalists, and courtesy of donors. Thanks to Cyclingnews for the quality of their archives approximately since the year 2000 helps to validate other sources worldwide. Special thanks to Alfred North for his tremendous contribution to the women's cycling over the last 30 years, which his archives dating from 1984 to the present day has been an overwhelming contribution to women's cycling worldwide. This is the first time that in depth compilation of the women rider's palmares have been well researched and posted to the Internet for the whole cycling world to see. They are comprehensive and cover several decades. If you use my work, please give credit.
