Rebecca Twigg was born on March 26, 1963. She was one of the most successful track riders in history with a career spanning two decades and winning an incredibly 6 gold medals at the Worlds. She also won 2 silver medals and a bronze, two of which came from the Olympic games.

Rebecca Twigg

She was a three time Olympian (84, 92, 96), and a ace rider in (3km) pursuit. She won the pursuit more times then you could possibly imagine at both the national and international level. Rebecca seems to be born to ride the pursuit setting the world record four times in the 3km pursuit.

Rebecca was an excellent road racer winning both classics and stage races. She won the International Women's Challenge 3 times in a row (84, 85, 86), a record which was never broken, and she received an award at the end of the 1999 edition of the race.

She won the final GC of the Coors Classic, Super Prestige, Washington Trust Classic, Bud Light Mammoth Cycling Classic, Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, Coca Cola Vulcan Tour, Great Earth Tucson Bicycle Classic and Mike Nields Memorial Stage Race to mention a few.

Rebecca started racing the last 70's and won the National Road Time Trial Championship in 1981 at just 18 years of age. Rebecca was a smart kid, entering the University of Washington at age 14 and continued her studies into the 80's. She excelled brilliantly as a track star in the 80's and reigned supreme.

After nearly two decades of success in cycling, she was still riding well taking 1st place in the pursuit at the nationals in Colorado Springs. She also took 3rd in the time trail, and won the veterans division.

Rebecca Twigg was also noted to have set a world record with a broken collarbone. She was not only a very intelligent person, but she had a lot of fire in her bones, the desire to win and overcome all odds. She was very dedicated to cycling training three to six hours a day and displayed incredible strength, courage and determination. She was a professional in every sense of the word.

In the early year she raced against the big names of that era, Connie Carpenter, Jeannie Longo, Maria Canins, Catherine Marsal, Laura Charmeda, Inga Thomspon, Karen Kurreck, Marion Clignet, Kathryn Watt, Yvonne Mc Gregor, Jeanie Golay, Catherine Marsal, Marianne Berglund, Eve Stephenson, Linda Brenneman, Karen Livingston-Bliss, Juli Furtado, Ruthie Matthes, Sally Zack, Alison Dunlap, Julie Young, Bunki Bankaitis-Davis, Clara Hughes, Carolyn Donnelly, Leontien Van Moorsel, Connie Paraskevin Young, Sarah Neil, Cecile Odin, Imelda Chiappa and Linda Jackson to name a few.

Rebecca Twigg was truly one of the greats of all time. She spanned nearly the entire history of the sport which started to really evolve professionally in the 80's, much more so in the 90's, till the present day.

Articles are written in my own words, researched from a variety of sources from Europe and the United States, including seeing things first hand at races, researching race videos, books, magazines, libraries etc. Stats and career highlights, palmares were confirmed as much as possible from several sources worldwide so that they can be as accurate as possible. In some instances the riders have contributed to the quality of the articles, and photos were taken at various races worldwide. Photos provided by a number of sources, from the riders to professional journalists, and courtesy of donors. Thanks to Cyclingnews for the quality of their archives approximately since the year 2000 helps to validate other sources worldwide. Special thanks to Alfred North for his tremendous contribution to the women's cycling over the last 30 years, which his archives dating from 1984 to the present day has been an overwhelming contribution to women's cycling worldwide. This is the first time that in depth compilation of the women rider's palmares have been well researched and posted to the Internet for the whole cycling world to see. They are comprehensive and cover several decades. If you use my work, please give credit.
